Telling the Beads Bead 2 - Episode 3 His Name is John

B2 - E3 His Name is John

Mary was really pleased to be of help to Elizabeth during the last few weeks before the baby was born and, in due time, a healthy baby boy made his entrance into the world to the delight of his parents and Mary. When their friends and neighbours learned that Elizabeth had had a son, they were overjoyed for them and full of thanksgiving for the goodness and mercy that God had shown to the new parents.

A week later, family, friends and neighbours were gathered together for the baby's circumcision and naming ceremony. Everyone present naturally expected that he would be called Zechariah after his father but to their surprise, Elizabeth said that he was to be named John. This caused some raised eyebrows because no one in their family had that name so they turned towards Zechariah to see his reaction. He made a sign to be given a writing tablet and wrote down these words; “His name is John.”

At that instant, to everyone’s amazement, his speech returned. Prayers of praise sprang from his lips as he thanked God for the great gift that they had received. He acclaimed that their son was to be the prophet who would prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah, the Saviour who would bring forgiveness and peace. The news spread throughout the neighbourhood and a great sense of reverence and awe was felt towards their child as people wondered what his future might be.

It had been decided by the two couples that Mary would stay with Elizabeth for about three months, at which time, Joseph was to return to escort her home. The sometimes difficult, as with any new baby, but precious times the cousins shared during the first few weeks of this long-awaited baby's life would remain in their memories forever.

Elizabeth and Zechariah were eternally grateful for Mary's support and, though sad to see her leave, felt encouraged and confident enough to continue to bring up their son who was to play such a pivotal role in the life and destiny of Mary's son. Mary and Joseph returned home to their own village to be welcomed back with joy by her parents and their friends and neighbours.
