Some reasons for belief in a God of justice and mercy

One of the greatest consolations of life can be the conviction
that God will ensure that everyone, either in this world or the next,
will receive justice and mercy for all that has happened in their lives.

The good will be blessed and the sad will be comforted
and all who have been ill-treated in any way will receive justice.

Conversely, all those who have caused sadness and suffering of any kind
or ill-used anyone in any way will come to feel the suffering they have caused
and be brought to feel true remorse for their actions and the desire to make amends.

About 'opening up our treasures'

Many of us may well be inclined to say, "What treasures! I don't have any, literally or figuratively,'' but what about such attributes as smiling, showing courtesy, kindness, thoughtfulness? All of us have skills of one kind or another if we only came to realise and recognise them as such.

'Opening up our treasures'  could be as simple as wearing our best clothes for church or when we go out; using our 'best' cutlery and crockery regularly and giving more than the asking price in charity shops.

This last idea came in a book called ''365 Ways to make the World a Better Place.'' It's one that took my fancy and one which I've tried to follow. That may seem very little, but, for me, it's another step along the path of countering my 'careful'  (or economical as I prefer to call them) habits!

There must be hundreds of ways in which we can open ourselves and our possessions up for the good of others. If, like me, you tend to 'save things for special occasions' then, considering that we may well be dead before we get our money's worth out of them may be an incentive to open up the treasures we do have, sooner rather than later.

An imagining of the life of Jesus - Mary and Elizabeth - Bead 2 - Episode 2 - Telling the Beads

Bead 2 - Episode 2 - Mary and Elizabeth

So it was that, after two months of married life, Mary and Joseph were on their way to make their visit. As they neared their destination, Mary went ahead, delighted at the prospect of giving her cousin a happy surprise. She knocked on the door and entered, to the utter astonishment and delight of Elizabeth who went to embrace her very unexpected but highly welcome visitor As she did so, she felt her baby leap inside her.

Although she hadn't known that Mary was also expecting a baby, she was filled with such an overwhelming sense of God's presence that she cried out, "Mary, you are the most blessed of all women and the baby you are carrying is blessed too. How can it possibly be that the mother of my Lord has come to visit me? Even my own baby jumped for joy when I heard your voice."

Mary was overwhelmed by her greeting and poured out her thanksgiving to God for honouring her, a completely unknown and obscure person, with the most precious gift of all time. God was showing her that because of this gift, she would be held as blessed and exalted for all ages to come.

In her prayer, she foresaw that God's all-merciful love for the poor, downtrodden and afflicted people of this world would set them free from oppression and injustice. This prayer would have resonated deeply with Elizabeth who had been set free from the shame of childlessness.

By this time, Joseph had arrived and he and Zechariah, despite his inability to speak, were swept up in the celebrations. The two couples spent some time together before Joseph returned home. He was happy to do so knowing that Mary would be able to give much-needed support to Elizabeth and Zechariah and also gain so much from being with them and helping them at this momentous point in their lives.

An imagining of the life of Jesus - Elizabeth and Zechariah - Bead 2 - Episode 1 - Telling the Beads

2 - Episode 1 - Elizabeth and Zechariah

When Elizabeth married Zechariah she moved to his home in a small town on the outskirts of Jerusalem but they had always stayed in close contact with Mary, Anne and Joachim, visiting whenever they could. During these years, she had watched her young cousin grow into the lovely young person she was now.

As Mary and Joseph were making their way to visit them, Elizabeth and Zechariah, utterly unaware of the fact, were preparing for the birth of their baby in a month’s time. They had gradually come to terms with the reality that, after all the long and childless years of their marriage and despite their earnest but unanswered prayers over many years, their deepest desire to have a child of their own was about to be fulfilled.

The events of the previous year which had brought their dream about were still fresh in their memories. Zechariah was a member of a priestly order and on one particular occasion when it was the turn of his order to perform the temple duties, he had been chosen by lot to be the priest who was to burn the incense in the sanctuary while the people prayed outside.

As he entered the sanctuary, he saw the vision of an angel standing by the altar. He was terrified but the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah, I have been sent to tell you that your prayers have been heard. Your wife, Elizabeth, is going to have a baby, a son, and you are to name him John. He will bring great joy into your lives and many people will share your joy.

“You must bring him up in a way which befits his destiny. He will be full of God’s spirit and become a great prophet who will bring the people of Israel back to God and help to reconcile families, encouraging everyone who has strayed from living a good life to turn away from their bad habits. It is he is who be given the great task of preparing the people for the coming of the Messiah.”

Zechariah’s response was to say to the angel, “How can this be true because I am too old now and so is my wife?” The reproof came immediately. “I am Gabriel and I have come from God to bring you this good news. My words will come about in due time but because you have doubted my message, you will be unable to speak until this happens.”

Meanwhile, all the people who had been praying outside began to wonder what had happened because Zechariah had been in the Sanctuary for such a long time. When he finally appeared and tried to make signs to them, they realised that he had been struck dumb and understood that he had seen a vision. He gave them no indication of the message he had received; his only desire was to return home as soon as his time of service came to an end to share the story with Elizabeth.

On his arrival, the whole story had to be conveyed to her by signs and by writing on a tablet. Like her husband, she could hardly take the news in but when, sometime later, she found out that she was indeed expecting a baby they were both overjoyed beyond measure. She and Zechariah decided to keep the news to themselves for a while so, for five happy and contented months, they savoured the realisation that, after all these years, the disgrace that Elizabeth had felt so deeply had been taken away by this wonderful gift from God.

About God always being with us

Father, you made us and you hold us in existence. You have given us your Son to be our teacher and healer, our shepherd and Saviour, our Lord and our God.

Jesus, you came from heaven to be our brother and our friend, to walk beside us every moment of our lives. You gave us your mother to be our mother and you sent your Spirit to live within us.

Holy Spirit you are within us, helping us to know, love and serve God by knowing, loving and serving others.

With you, Blessed Trinity, and with St Joseph as our foster father, we have our Patron Saints to pray for me and our very own Guardian Angel to direct, protect and watch over us.

May we always remember that you are with us till the end of time.

About birth control and the Catholic teaching on the subject

The Catholic Church considers the Natural Method to be the only acceptable way to fulfil the concept of marital love as understood by the Church. It entails abstaining from marital relations during the fertile period of the woman's monthly cycle.

Let us consider the case of a Catholic family with a large number of children where the natural method would be extremely hard to follow in practice and is very far from being 100% reliable. One or other of the couple might decide to have a procedure which would reliably ensure that they had no more children.

If this step is taken for love of the other and in the belief that the choice was in the best interests of their family life it may very well never be regretted, even though it would be quite a sacrifice for one of them.

All either could honestly say was that if this action was an offence against love which is surely the best definition of 'sin' then they would be sincerely sorry and leave it in the hands of God.

My belief is that the 'rights and wrongs' of this issue depend on the hearts and motives of those involved and that such an action is not an intrinsically 'sinful' act.

About the timelessness of heaven

How can we who live within time,

begin to comprehend the timelessness of heaven?

We can't.

About the existence of evil and suffering

We are born into and raised in an imperfect world

by imperfect people.

Should we then be surprised by the existence

of both evil and suffering?

About the citizens of the kingdom of God

In the kingdom of God,

there are no second-class citizens.

About famine and feast

We don't have to worry about the world.

It is always 'famine and feast'.

And all things pass.

About when this world is scary

Whatever this world is like, however bad at times,

I know there is a sanctuary which awaits us

where "all will be well.''

About where we are in God

God, I am a point on the compass of your being.

I am held in the vortex of your love.

About the Word and the Sacrament

The Word without the Sacrament

is like the mind without the heart.

About saying the rosary

The rosary can enfold you in the arms of holiness.

Hold beautiful beads in your hands; it helps.

Let yourselves sink into the rhythm of the words;

bathe your thoughts in the depths of the mysteries.

About waking to birdsong

As the Cathedral of the Universe
opened its doors
in the early dawn of a new day
and the birds sang a chorus of praise
to their Maker
and the awakening world,

so my soul was lifted up to God.

About grief, sorrow and mental health

Mary Kenny in the Catholic Herald, 21.4.17

"I don't think that it is correct to associate the pain of bereavement with mental health issues.

This, I believe, is a diagnostic error that runs through our society and should be examined. Grief and sorrow are deeply distressing experiences, but they are not a form of mental illness.

To feel grief and sorrow is a normal response to a very sad event. Indeed, not to feel grief and sorrow as a consequence of loss would be a greater indication of having something wrong with your emotional processes."

About the difference between murder and killing

We have the choice
to harm or help, to heal or hurt.
Animals may kill but cannot 'murder'.
We can do either or both.
Therein lies the difference.
We can choose.

May we choose
to help where there is harm
and heal where there is hurt.

About joining in the feast of life

God doesn't invite us to be spectators at the feast of life

but partakers in its joy, love, peace and truth.

About talking to Jesus when lying in bed unable to sleep

I wish I could be a tiny angel, who could flutter, like a butterfly, up to heaven and whisper in your ear how much I love you.

I can see you as a beautiful baby, smiling and gurgling, lying in the cradle that your father-on-earth, Joseph, made for you in his own workshop, before you were born, and in which they laid you when they brought you home from Bethlehem and from the temple in Jerusalem.

I can see you as a young child, playing around your mother's feet as she went about her daily chores and, as a young lad, playing out on the streets with the other children of the village.

Then, as a young man, I see you in the workshop, learning from your father how to plane and shape the wood into furniture and all the bits and bobs needed by the community.

I can see you as a young adult, taking care of Joseph in his old age and, later, of Mary in her widowhood,  creating beautiful wooden pieces as your father had done before you; smiling at the customers and their children, laughing with your neighbours, supporting each other in times of difficulties.

Then, I see you off with your friends, for a week's break, to listen to your cousin, John, who's preaching by the River Jordan.

Then, things were never the same again. Thanks be to God, Our Father.

About human creativity

Our creativity comes from the well-spring of goodness and beauty

which lies (often untapped) within the depths of our beings,

all of which is a gift from the creativity of God.

About being able to be and to say sorry

Why can't some people say sorry when they know they are in the wrong?

If only we could learn to be and to say sorry after some lapse or other

life would be so much better.
